RAK Construction: Growth is Great, but the Body Count is Unacceptable

Ras Al Khaimah is booming, but there’s a dark side to all these new skylines. We’re seeing a streak of construction accidents, industrial fires, and total infrastructure fails that aren’t just “bad luck”—they’re the result of massive gaps in how we’re running our sites.

I’ve been in the UAE geospatial and construction game for over 22 years. I’ve walked these sites. I’ve seen what happens when the pressure to build fast overrides the common sense to build safe. If we don’t start calling out these patterns, the headlines are only going to get worse.

The Real Cost of Rushed Work

Look at the Nakheel wall collapse in 2025. One worker dead because a wall gave way during the rain. People call it an “act of God,” but as an engineer, I call it poor drainage and rushed concrete. Rain just exposes the shortcuts you already took.

Then you’ve got the 2018 roof collapse and the constant industrial fires in the manufacturing zones. These happen because someone decided fire suppression was too expensive or that “we’ll fix the structural support later.” Later never comes.

When the “Gatekeepers” Stop Giving a Damn

This is the part that really gets me: Two RAK engineering firms were suspended for a full year in 2025. When the consultants—the people who are supposed to be the ethical final line of defense—start faking permits or signing off on garbage work, the whole system is broken. If the guys at the top are cutting corners, you can’t blame the laborer on the 20th floor for a safety violation.

It’s a Systemic Mess

It’s not just the buildings. It’s the whole environment:

  • The Roads: We’ve known about those 16 killer U-turns since 2018. Why are they still causing pile-ups? Because infrastructure planning is an afterthought to real estate sales.
  • The Mines: Flying debris and equipment fails in the quarries are still happening because basic housekeeping is treated like a suggestion rather than a rule.
  • The Environment: Illegal dumping in wadis and zero cleanup. We’re trashing the very land we’re trying to develop.

My Take: What Needs to Change Yesterday

If you’re running a project in RAK, “good enough” is going to get someone killed. We need to get serious:

  1. Weather Audits are Mandatory: If it’s October and your drainage isn’t set, your site is a liability.
  2. Kill Self-Certification: We need independent, third-party eyes on every major structural phase. No more grading your own homework.
  3. Fines that Actually Hurt: A small fine is just a “cost of doing business.” License suspensions and heavy penalties are the only things that will make these firms pay attention.

We’re building the future of this Emirate. Let’s make sure we aren’t building it on top of preventable tragedies.
