Direct Shear Testing Machine
Shear test machines are used to measure the force and horizontal displacement of a representative soil specimen sheared along a controlled horizontal plane at a constant deformation rate. Typically, three or more tests make up a series and are combined to determine strength properties such as Mohr strength envelopes. The direct shear test provides insight into the shear resistance and residual strength characteristics of soil.
Key Features of Direct Shear Apparatus
The apparatus provided with Microprocessor control.
Large on-board LCD screen display.
Direct entry via touch sensitive keyboard.
Rapid approach and return to start datum.
Fully variable speed, 0.00001 to 9.99999 mm/minute.
Accepts specimens up to 100 mm square.
Applications of Direct Shear Apparatus
Determines bearing capacity of soil. Design shallow and deep foundations (e.g., footings, piles). The apparatus helps to determine shear failure potential beneath structures.
Direct shear test helps to evaluate the lateral earth pressure.
Estimates the shear strength of soils in slopes or embankments.
Determines subgrade shear strength for road base design. Evaluates shear strength of compacted fill materials.
