THE TECHNICAL GUIDE TO COLLIMATION & EDM BEAM ALIGNMENT FOR SURVEY INSTRUMENTS
In high-precision work like Dubai towers or desert highways, even a tiny collimation error can make your entire layout off. We’re talking measurements that create systematic bias across your whole site. This isn’t just maintenance – it’s about keeping your project from turning into almost a six-figure loss.
What Actually Is Collimation?
The Collimator is the “master reference” for your instrument. It’s an optical system that projects perfectly parallel reticles in the collimator tubes, so we can see exactly how much your telescope’s line of sight has drifted from the horizontal/vertical axes.

The problem: If your crosshairs aren’t perfectly perpendicular to your horizontal circle, every angle you measure carries the same error. Multiply that across 500 points, and rapidly your measurements are off by centimeters.
The Real Problematic Scenario: EDM Beam Misalignment
This is where most modern total stations fail. Your telescope crosshairs might be dead center on the prism, but if the EDM laser beam isn’t traveling down the exact same centerline, you’re measuring distance to a point is off your line of sight.
How we fix it at Rise Geo:
- Offset mapping – Put a target at known distance, measure the exact millimeter offset where the laser actually lands
- Mechanical adjustment – Open the instrument, realign the internal prisms and
mirrors to bring beam back to center - Firmware constants – Update the instrument’s internal math via OEM software so it “knows” its new zero position
Field Check vs Factory Calibration
The classic Two-Peg Test works great for levels, but total stations need a proper Collimator System for permanent correction. There is no presumption – we baseline against factory tolerances.
